Community Activities & Committees

The Jordan Area Community Council (JACC) depends on the participation of its residents and businesses. There are a variety of ways residents can put their talents and skills to use. If you are interested in any of these areas, please call the office at 612-353-5601 and leave your name, number and area of interest.

Like to garden? JACC has two community gardens and will likely be starting a third this summer. Even if you know nothing about gardening, your help is welcome, and you will learn what you need.

Want to help improve housing stock in the neighborhood? Other improvements? Consider joining the Housing and Community Development Committee at its monthly meeting (See Events for time/location)

Concerned about crime and safety? The Public Safety Committee is just getting started. Or perhaps a block club (see info below) is where you want to put your efforts.

Are you a numbers person? Like dealing with money issues? Perhaps the Finance Committee is where you can help.

Do you have a passion to work with youth? Volunteer for the Youth Initiatives Committee by calling the office.

Community Safety

It is the goal of Jordan Area Community Council (JACC) to help provide a safe and healthy environment for neighborhood residents and businesses and increase the social stability of the neighborhood through concerted crime prevention programs and safety strategies in conjunction with our law enforcement partners.

JACC accomplishes this by encouraging and promoting connections among neighbors, giving residents the opportunity to get to know one another and come together to prevent or solve problems and to celebrate our community.

JACC works in partnership with law enforcement, prosecutors, other public agencies such as housing inspections and licensing, business and rental property owners, and other community groups and institutions to gather resources and develop plans to address the community concerns.

There are many ways to get involved and participate in JACC’s neighborhood safety projects. Here is a list of what’s happening now and some of the resources available.

Joining a Block Club

Block clubs are one of the tools used in community policing. They are a way for neighbors to meet and get to know some of the crime prevention specialists and officers who patrol their streets. Often, patrol officers and specialists will attend block club meetings to talk about specific incidents that have occurred in the neighborhood or just to answer citizen’s questions about the police department.

A block club may be just one block on two sides of a street or it may cover a larger area. Block clubs are among the best ways to reduce the likelihood of crime and to have a voice in the neighborhood. They can address multiple neighborhood issues as well as be a basis for social gatherings

There are no rules. Block clubs can meet as often as once a month when needed or to plan an event such as a garage sale. A block club can involve organizing a child-care co-op or a children's play-group. A block club can help elderly neighbors or plant a community garden. It's up to those involved.

Restorative Justice Community Action (RJCA)

RJCA brings offenders and community members together in a conference setting to discuss the impact of the offense on the neighborhood and develop an agreement in which the offender repays the harm done to the community, often through service projects and financial donations.
